About us
Paul Cannon
Paul started doing cryptic crosswords at the age of twelve and first compiled them for his University magazine in the 1980’s. Now a semi-retired hiking guide he has also worked as a scaffolder, R.E. teacher, circus performer, stunt-man, horse-back safari guide, flying-trapeze instructor, rock-climbing instructor and barman. He has travelled extensively, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, sailed The Atlantic Ocean, been on T,V, a couple of times and has Guinness World Records for ocean rowing. He also plays guitar, sings and writes songs. One day he hopes to compile crosswords for The Guardian with John Newman-Holden.
John Newman-Holden
John learned the pleasures of the cryptic crossword in the precious quiet moments between shows during his career in theatre. He has worked as a Production and Stage Manager in repertory and touring theatre, and also travelling around the world onboard cruise ships. He currently makes performances brighter and louder at a university theatre, sometimes inflicting his wisdom upon passing students. John has enjoyed time as a musician in various bands, and written musicals for stage and school. He has finally achieved his dream of one day compiling crosswords with Paul Cannon.
Why Trebizond?
The Empire of Trebizond was one of the three successor states of the Byzantine Empire that existed during the 13th through to the 15th century.
The level of interest they had in cryptic crosswords is something which has so far eluded historians; but what is known for certain is that their flag was a doubled-headed eagle. The same number of heads as us.
